The Diamondz of Alenfir Series: Farya and the Diamondz
   Beatrice Amati, Year 6 Blue

“It’s been there forever.”

Farya felt the last word, ‘Forever’, touch her lips tenderly like a sweet memory finally spoken. Jinny Heathbone nodded in approval. Jinny and Farya had known each other since the beginning of pre-school. Ever since Farya had saved Jinny’s tomcat, Topsy, from a tragic truck-load accident, Jinny and Farya had been inseparable. Now, both Farya and Jinny were grown, independent twelve-year-olds at Brooksville Middle School.

“However, it is JUST a tree and that was JUST a rumour you know.” Jinny pointed out as the recess bell rang its high-pitched song over their heads.

“I’ll just go check it out. See ya later in Algebra!” waved Farya, tossed her shoulder length mud-blonde hair over her shoulders and strode confidently onto Brooksville’s playground.

The moment Farya touched the Old Oak, she felt herself falling, drowning, into an endless darkness. Plunging into space, Farya screamed. A pointless scream. Who would hear her in this nightmarish darkness? Then suddenly, she hit ground. Blinking uncertainly, Farya opened her eyes. It was…unimaginable. Impossible. Unbelievable. A scorching sun hit her face, gently, calmly. “Welcome,” uttered a voice. Everything was different, definitely NOT Brooksville Middle School’s playground. A rainbow of colour was everywhere, on flowers, on animals, even in the sky! But something was strange, different.

Not to mention awkward ‘Creatures’ standing in front of her, midgets with long, thin pointy ears and strange lace garments strapped around their pale, bony bodies.

Then it struck her.

She looked down, only to find her slim, tanned legs replaced by hideous white bones. Furthermore, her cute round ears had morphed into pointy daggers at the side of her head!

“Welcome to Alenfir, Farya Hopebringer.” repeated the voice. Farya was dazed and confused, with hundreds of thoughts conjuring up a storm in her head. She looked up and noticed it was one of ‘Creatures’ speaking to her. She asked herself another question - ‘How did it know my name?’

It was only a few hours after her fall that she began realising exactly what was going on. To begin with, the ones she called ‘Creatures’ were actually known as Elvrins, and they were the inhabitants of this world, Alenfir. Until, of course, Balderaf took over. Balderaf wasn’t exactly a person, or even an Elvrin. He was more of a cloud, a cloud of blackness and misery, of evil and disdain. However, Alenfir still relied on one hope that Balderaf didn’t know of: the 6 Diamondz of Alenfir. There was the Ruby; Diamond of Fire. The Crystal; Diamond of Ice. The Emerald; Diamond of Earth. The Sapphire; Diamond of Water. The Opal; Diamond of Air. And finally, the most potent, most powerful of all: The Hofilia; Diamond of Colour and Friendship. And because of the Diamondz, hope still lingered in the hearts of the Elvrins. However, not only did they rely on the Diamondz, but also on Farya, as saviour and Hopebringer of Alenfir. Touching the Old Oak in Brooksville had sent a message to the Elvrins. A message of hope and future. Hopefully, Farya would agree to their demanding, adventurous request. Requiring skill, bravery, and a pure heart Farya was to set off in a quest to find the 6 Diamondz of Alenfir. It might have seemed a lot to ask for, however, Farya wasn’t an ordinary girl.

Decades ago, Alenfir was simply a peaceful sanctuary of the Diamondz, Elvrins, and Ranleifols – Elvrin for animals. Almost instantly, a great evil cloud took over peaceful Alenfir. Erinfale. Potent and Mighty, he spread his black cloud over Alenfir, burning crops and creating mighty storms for the Elvrins at sea. Pure-hearted and brave, the Elvrins fought and died to get back what had been taken from them, unfortunately, in vain. Suddenly, out of nowhere came a young magician known as the Hopebringer, whom fought Erinfale with the Diamondz and destroyed him forever. Once again, Alenfir was at peace.

Nevertheless, a prophecy was foretold.

In the distant future, the exact event would replay itself, only with a mightier, powerful evil than before. And now the time had come again. Now it was up to Farya, the new Hopebringer to retrieve the Diamondz and destroy Balderaf.

The only problem now was, HOW? WHERE? WHEN? To go? Sighing deeply, a young Elvrin named Etchfoot left the reunion room, his head hung low in disappointment. Farya watched him go, and she too sighed.

“I believe you should set off at ONCE,” muttered Lendfor, the leader of the Elvrins and the Elvrin Farya had heard speaking to her when she arrived. “A map should not be required, as most believe the heart of a Hopebringer should be able to guide itself…” Then he too stood up and quietly left the room. Farya began to wonder what Lendfor meant by ‘the heart of a Hopebringer should be able to guide itself’. Puzzled and tired, Farya made her way to her chamber, awaiting the dawn to answer her questions.

Three long weeks later, Farya found herself in a completely different place compared to where she had been three weeks before.

The Forest of Jaden was magnificent. Once again, Farya’s prediction had been correct; the dawn HAD brought answers to her questions. The map problem had been solved in a surprisingly obvious manner. In the end Lendfor gave up and the Elvrins had given her a map, a crystal map of all the places in Alenfir that hovered slightly above ground and followed Farya wherever she went. All she had to do was pass all the clans in Alenfir, retrieve the Diamondz and fight the final battle with Balderaf. Furthermore, she had to prove her heart pure and good to all the clans: Fire, Earth, Water, Ice, Air and Rainbow.

Only one thing wasn’t going according to plan. Certainly, Farya should have been in the Ice clan by now. Unfortunately, she was still in the forest of Jaden! At least she had proved her heart pure to the Fire clan, by fighting a giant Lava Orc called Erfon and earning the Ruby. But it still wasn’t enough! She had been given four weeks to complete her assignment, and already three had gone by. It was hopeless. She would never save Alenfir, never have all the Diamondz, and by the end she would never really be Farya Hopebringer…Farya dropped to her knees, exhausted and depressed. “I feel hopeless.” she muttered, and began to weep softly.

“There, There little one,” whispered a reassuring voice close to her.

“What..?” she sat up and peered around cautiously, afraid it might be an evil earth spirit tempting her to her doom…But it wasn’t. It was an angel, glowing with a godly light and emanating a strange sense of hope, goodwill and joy.

“I am Laynevair, spirit of hope, bringer of joy. I have watched you during your journey, and I have seen your heart is true. Sadly, you seem to be having problems with your time and direction. Don’t worry young one. I will help.” and with that, he lifted Farya up into his arms, like a loving mother cradling its baby, and whipped across Alenfir, faster than any wind.

The soft breeze teased and tossed Farya’s hair in multiple directions. Suddenly, the breeze grew slower and Farya felt Laynevair descend to ground. Or was it ground? Below her, Farya saw a clear crystal material, more like glass, instead of firm land and above her she saw a universe of dancing stars. Panicking, she began to toss and turn, then relaxed when Laynevair thudded softly onto the glass without breaking it. Suddenly she noticed something…more. A round metal table was placed in the middle of the glass floor. On it there lay a dazzling, beautiful necklace with a Ruby, an Emerald, a Crystal, a Sapphire, an Opal and Hofilia…

The Diamondz of Alenfir!

“The Diamondz!” she cried excitedly. “But how..?”

“One day you’ll know young one,” whispered Laynevair. “But for now it is not of importance. Your mission was to fight Balderaf. And you will. Goodbye, little one.” And he vanished into a thick golden mist. Farya picked up the necklace, and power surged through her hands. She felt amazing. All the power of the elements had come flowing into her fingers, and she could feel their strength in her soul and mind. She had the power of Alenfir. Unexpectedly, suddenly, everything started changing. It was foggy, blurred and unseeable. Farya closed her eyes and let the peace of the elements flow through her veins, her mind, and her soul.

Farya opened her eyes, only to find herself in a different dimension. The sky was murky black, and the land was a blood-red. The terrain was flat and still, but a sense of evil and sadness pulsed in the air. Suddenly a cloud began forming in front of Farya, this cloud blacker than coal and ash. To Farya’s amazement, the cloud began to speak.

“Well, well, well, what do we have here?” it spoke with such ferocity, malice and hatred that you would have guessed he was the devil himself.

“Come to fight me? Destroy me, eh? Go ahead and try!” it roared, and a gust of billowing red dust charged at Farya. But she was ready, and blocked the dust with a ferocious blow of wind. The battle raged on, no-one really winning and no-one really losing. Then Farya knew exactly what to do. Instead of hitting back a blow or forcing back a kick, Farya let joy, hope, and love flow into his head. In an instant, there was silence.

Balderaf had vanished, and in his place a small black marble pulsed red light. Farya knew exactly what it was. It was Balderaf’s heart, soul, all he had ever lived for, and the real Balderaf was a peaceful mist floating away in the skies. The marble was called Evil. Farya knew her job was done, but didn’t know what to expect. Then the unexpected happened. Farya was sucked into a tunnel of black, with nothing to see and nothing to hear. Then, she thudded onto land. She knew immediately where she was. Brooksville! She turned her head towards the Old Oak, just in time to see herself vanish into the tree. Joyfully, she smiled, tossed her head back and laughed.

“What the heck do you think you’re doing?” retorted a familiar friendly voice.

“Jinny!” cried Farya. “It’s so great to see you again!” and hugged Jinny happily.

“What do you mean by AGAIN?” muffled Jinny, trying to shrug off Farya. “I just came by to remind you Algebra lesson starts in five minutes. You know how Mrs. Craig can be if you’re late.” she shuddered at the thought. Farya was confused. So all that time she spent in Alenfir had been just less than two minutes! Grinning, she and Jinny re-entered the school, ready for an algebra lesson. And who knows, thought Farya, maybe one day I’ll see the Diamondz of Alenfir once again.

The Diamondz of Alenfir Series: Saffira in Alequae

By Beatrice Amati, Year 6 Blue

“Faster! Faster!”

Meet Miss Rane, Rane the Pain, the High School’s Physical Education teacher.

HatternPark Junior High to be precise. She loves being called Miss Rane, almost as much as she loves to torture us and make us run 3 times around the school grounds every day. However, I’ve gotta admit, I am one of the best runners in our school. I’ve won three HatternPark derby races and four Champions league Marathons.  Impressive, huh? As I was saying, every day Miss Rane makes us run 1000 meters and I don’t mind, but for my best friend Julia, life just isn’t easy on the track. Unfortunately, Julia has Asthma, and every two minutes she has to take a puff on her inhaler and bend down to remove the stitches. I, on the other hand, can run for miles without getting a single stitch, and only occasionally my legs start to get tired.

“Hey Saffira,” Julia panted. “Wait up!”

I turned round just to see Julia come jogging up beside me, her inhaler in her hand. She took another few puffs then continued talking.

“What’s up? Have you already finished North America?”

Julia isn’t geeky, ugly or unpopular. In fact she’s quite the opposite. Her pale blue eyes always shine whenever light hits them, and her sarcastic jokes always keep some friends around.

“No, in fact, I hardly think I’ve run enough to keep Rane the Pain satisfied.” I retorted. Julia tossed her head back and laughed. Another one of Julia’s amazing qualities. Her laugh. When Julia laughs, it sounds exactly like a movie star’s laugh. And people wonder why I nicknamed her Julia Roberts!

We got our time results later that Thursday. I got 3 minutes 26 seconds. Julia got 5 minutes 49 seconds.  I don’t mind, after all, she is my best friend. After P.E we had Math, Geography, and Science. Finally, Thursday ended.

“Can you come over for pizza tonight?” I asked Julia.

“Sorry. I still have to finish English homework. How about tomorrow? And we could have a sleepover too.” I considered the idea.

“Sure. Why not? I’ll ask my mom.  See ya!” I turned my head and started walking. It’s not far from HatternPark Junior High to my house, only five minutes walk away.  Suddenly, I notice a light flickering beside me, on and off, on and off. I turn my head to see the school’s corridor glow a pale red light. Cautiously, I make my way in to investigate where the light was coming from. The school was empty by now, only a few traces of the students left behind, crumpled essay papers, rulers and pencils. The light kept glowing, then suddenly, began changing colors. I followed it down to where it was emanating from, and found myself in the School’s storage room. The glow was coming from a necklace, a beautiful necklace with multi-colored diamonds laid into six silver slots. It was glowing more and more, as if sensing my presence. As if, I told myself. How could a necklace feel the presence of a human being? I edged forward, to the desk where the necklace was laid out. Then I did the one thing that would change my life completely.

I touched the necklace.

The floor beneath me opened, and I was sucked into a hole of darkness.

My first reaction was to scream my head off, but no sound came out when I tried. Meanwhile, I kept falling without stopping, not even hitting a passerby object. It was, well, a smooth ride. While I tried to concentrate on what was happening, I began to hear a sweet singsong voice, like the rustle of leaves or the ripple of waves only a sweeter, more high-pitched sound. Miraculously I began to relax. I was just about to fall asleep, when all of a sudden I heard a loud SPLASH! And every inch of my body was surrounded by water. Instantly, I struggle to swim to the surface but an invisible force is pulling me down, down, into the deepest corner of the ocean.

I slowly open my eyelids once again, trying to make out the blurry figures standing in front of me. I was dazed and confused. What were these people doing, staring at me like I was some kind of freak?

“Ugh…” I grunted heavily. They seemed to take it pretty seriously, because soon enough they were bustling around me live bees in a hive. As my eyes cleared away the salt water, I began to see what the misshapen figures really were.

Their faces were round and curved, but their cheeks looked as if someone had pulled them back into their bones and pinned them there. Ears were long, with curved tips facing up. They looked capable of hearing an ant marching thousands of miles away. But what struck me most were their bodies. Not only was their skin a slimy aqua color, and instead of legs they had a long, scaly tail and sharp pointed fins that could slice through water.

Then suddenly one of them pointed what looked like some kind of a spear at me.

“What are you doing here, human?” it asked. What did it mean by ‘Human’? These guys were obviously actors, dressed up in wacky mermaid costumes. Then how did I get into their studio? And how did I get there from HatternPark? And what was the business with falling into the water?

“Let’s take her to King Shellweed.” pointed out one of the Fish-Men. “He’ll know what to do with it.” Instantly I felt myself being tied up in seaweed, and carried by two of the Fish-Men as the others swam ahead. Swam? This didn’t make any sense. How could they swim in thin air? I was about to protest, to untie me and explain what was going on, but soon enough I felt my strength leave me and decided to leave the matter till later, when things would be clearer, and I let them drag me into the next hall.

The room was unlike anything I’d seen before.

The walls were strung with sparkling, Jade-colored seaweed, swaying gently to the rhythm of the ocean. The floor beneath me was a material similar to marble, except with a slight shade of purple. The ceiling was an Ark of gold, Ruby-red coral and dazzling rainbow colored fish. While I marveled at the Ocean wonders, an unexpected voice boomed throughout the hall.

“Quick, Frin and Fron, bring IT to me.” I looked up and saw an enormous Fish-Man, the biggest I’d seen for now. His chest was so big it spread from one end to the other of the gigantic coral throne he was positioned on. He beckoned for us to come forward. The two Fish-Men, Frin and Fron, dashed ahead still carrying me on their bulky shoulders.  I shivered, suddenly realizing how cold the water was. In HatternPark it was still spring, and there had been no need of heavy sweatshirts or wool jumpers, but now I wished so badly I had brought a small sweater just to cover myself up. I continued to shiver, and my teeth began to chatter tremendously. I saw the ‘Giant’ staring straight at me, with the same look that a Human might give to an annoying bug.

“Well, well, what do we have here?” he boomed.

“A human, from the other world they call Earth. What are you here for? Speak up, and let us Aleqans hear your opinion!”

I shivered some more, then raised my voice to tell them what I wanted to say.

“I am Saffira, and I just came here from HatternPark junior High. I know you might be wondering, who I am, and what I’m doing here, but I’m afraid it will have to be you to answer MY questions. Who are you? WHAT are you? Where am I? And why are your bodies so strange and irregular? I mean, you’re all fish!” I took a deep breath, then resumed my speech.

“I know I’m confusing you, but to be honest it is I who am confused. I need to be getting home; my Parents Farya and Peter Rightley are waiting for me, and expect me to be arriving home soon. So explain the situation and get me out of here!”

‘At the word ‘Farya’, the Giant’s eyes widened to the size of a table, and his face went pale. I got the feeling he had no intention of insulting me ever again.

“Are you really Farya’s Daughter?”

I gazed at him in amazement. By the way he ushered those words, I had a feeling he’d known my mother very well.

“You knew her?” I asked impatiently.

Suddenly, the pale, white Giant was lost, and all the color of before returned to his cheeks, as he broke off into a thunderous laughter.

“KNEW HER? KNEW HER? MY GIRL, SHE SAVED US ALL!”

I didn’t understand. He saw my puzzled face and began to explain.

“This, my girl, the wondrous world your feet are standing on, is the world of Alenfir, and I am the king of the Aleqans, King Shellweed. Long ago, decades before, it was a peaceful sanctuary of Aleqans; us of the water clan, Elvrins; those of the earth clan, Faerians; those of the Fire clan, Ionars; those of the Ice clan, Airials; those of the Air clan and Rolars; those of the  Rainbow clan. Each of these clans has their own, special, Diamond of Alenfir. The Earth clan has the Emerald. The Fire clan has the Ruby. The Ice clan has the Diamond. The Air clan has the Opal. And the Rainbow clan, have their treasured Hofilia. We, however, have the Saffire. And these all make the magical Diamondz of Alenfir.”

As soon as the word Saffire was spoken, I felt an immediate connection to this watery tribe. Ignoring my dreamy face, King Shellweed continued.

“However, none of the Clans knew about their special Diamondz, and as the saying goes, all good things come to an end. Indeed, soon after the creation of Alenfir, an evil cloud of darkness took over Alenfir. Its name was Erinfale. The poor Inhabitants of Alenfir, including us, fought savagely against Erinfale, each fighting to their last breath to get back their world. Then, out of the blue, a young lad known as The Hopebringer, stepped up and fought Erinfale, with the Diamondz all strung in a necklace he wore. And, to the tremendous joy of The Inhabitants, he forever destroyed Erinfale and Alenfir was at peace once more.” I was about to speak up and ask him what this had to do with my mother, but he gestured for me to stay silent, and so I did.

“Yet, a prophecy was foretold. It was said, decades later a new evil would take over Alenfir, but with mightier powers than those of Erinfale. And indeed, the prophecy was true. That’s where your mother comes in. In their moment of need, the Elvrins called upon the new Hopebringer in the World of Earth. We couldn’t believe it could happen, but indeed your mother heard their message and was sucked into this world by touching a somewhat magical tree. She was assigned the job of finding the Diamondz of Alenfir, and destroying the new great evil, Balderaf. Even this we couldn’t believe could happen, but your mother succeeded in her quest and destroyed Balderaf once and for all. We still don’t know how it happened, but as soon as Balderaf was defeated, a great light shone in the sky, and we rushed over to praise your mother for her bravery. However, when we got there, no trace of your Farya Hopebringer was found.” He hung his head slightly.

“Some don’t even believe it really happened anymore. She vanished so mysteriously they began to think it was all just a dream, in which Balderaf had somehow decided to leave by himself. But the others know what truly happened, and will never forget Farya and The Diamondz.”

Suddenly I understood everything.

It all had a connection to my mother’s strange behavior.

When I was young, at the age of six and a half, I stumbled upon my mother’s study. My mother had always forbid me to go there, but on that day, I decided I would anyways. As soon as I entered, I began rummaging through her files. Obviously, I was young; I didn’t understand most of the files I came upon. I was innocently looking for a game to entertain myself with. Until, I stumbled upon her School’s Personal Records. I was skimming through the page, until I reached the Teachers’ comments. As I read on, I learned more and more.  My mother, at the age of thirteen, had gone through an unexplainable change of Grade A student, to careless daydreamer. Ever since then, her Grades had fallen at a tremendous speed, until she was one of the ‘Most Incompetent Workers of The Class’, one of the teachers had said. Nobody could understand why, and whenever they asked her, all she’d say was, “I’m just daydreaming a little. That’s all.”

But now I knew the truth. She had never been able to get Alenfir out of her mind. Will I end up like that too? Will I lose all hope of ever being good at anything?

I sighed. Hopefully, it wouldn’t happen to me.

“But wait, King Shellweed, if the war is over, and the next new evil is only to come Decades later, then, why am I here?”

King Shellweed sighed.

“I knew you’d ask us at one point. I know it was cruel of us to leave a clone of the necklace to beckon you, but we need your help.”

So the necklace in the Storage room…they weren’t the real Diamondz of Alenfir! It was all a fake! I could feel anger boiling up inside me, desperate to explode out of the top of my head.

And it did.

“How could you! So you didn’t REALLY need me! You don’t need me to save Alenfir! What if I ended up like my mother, huh? Forgetting about the REAL world she lived in, and continuously daydreaming about the happy land of Alenfir! I don’t want to end up hopelessly lost in my own dreams just because I spent a few minutes in a world that doesn’t exist!”

King Shellweed sighed, and shook his mighty head. I could see he was disappointed of my response to his demand.

“I understand, of course, that you would like to return to Earth, to be with your family once again, however I cannot do so. As soon as you touched the Necklace clone, a spell was cast on you that, until you finish the quest we will set you, you won’t be able to return to the Human world, no matter what you do. I am sorry. But that is the way it is.”

My heart sank once again, into the darkest corner of the Ocean, and sadness overwhelmed me in waves. Once again, the Ocean tormented me to my unconsciousness.

When I re-opened my eyes, the landscape had changed once again.
